The Maryknoll Medical and Welfare Association Limited was founded in 1964 when Sister Rosalia Kettl, the Superior of the Maryknoll Sisters in Hong Kong, invited Lady Ivy Fung Ping Fan to become the first Chairperson of the Formation Committee to establish the Association.
The purpose of the Association if to raise funds and support the charitable works of the Maryknoll Sisters in Hong Kong.
For the past 30 years, the Association has been able to carry out all of its fund-raising events, eg. Flag Day, Raffle and Games Day, with much success due to the generosity of friends and the general public. Through a specially designed pamphlet and the publicity for our Annual Flag Day, the Association has been able to introduce to the public the different services rendered by the hospital.
Our Flag Day is our biggest fund-raising project. We must apply for a date from the Social Welfare Department the previous year. If given a date, we appeal to students to help us selling flags on our Flag Day. We also send out appeal letters to our friends and to large companies in Hong Kong. The aim of this project is to raise funds for the non-subvented areas of the Hospital such as Community Specialist Service, Pastoral Ministry Team and Dental Care Unit.
The success of the Association’s Annual Raffle depends on the generous support of the general public. The Association must apply for a licence from the Government in order to sell Raffle tickets. We appeal to our friends’ companies for Raffle prizes. We then apply for permission to sell Raffle tickets at various churches, schools, MTR stations, and shopping malls. Usually, the money raised in our Raffle Appeal will help to fund much needed equipment for the hospital.
